A recent jury verdict in Los Angeles concluded that Meta and Google can be held responsible for contributing to the mental health harm of a young user who had been exposed to their platforms from an early age1. The case concerns one individual, but it reflects a broader development: questions about social media are increasingly moving from public debate into legal accountability.

At the center of the case were not only the contents of the platforms, but also the way they are designed. Features such as infinite scroll were explicitly discussed. What appears to be a simple interface choice directly affects how long we stay and how difficult it becomes to stop.

The Loop Behind the Scroll

Scrolling is often described as passive, but it is better understood as a continuous sequence of micro-decisions with very little friction. Each new item requires a quick evaluation—continue or stop—yet the environment in which this happens offers no clear boundary.

There is no end of page, no interruption, no natural moment that suggests the interaction is complete. As a result, continuation becomes the default rather than a decision.

This mechanism is well documented. In one study, participants consumed significantly more food when their bowl was secretly refilled, simply because they never saw it empty (Wansink et al., 2005). The absence of a visible endpoint made it harder to determine when to stop.

The same principle applies to how we engage with content. When stopping cues disappear, there is nothing in the environment that signals a pause, and continuing requires less effort than stopping.

Variable Rewards and the “Slot Machine” Effect

The persistence of scrolling is not only a matter of continuity, but also of how rewards are structured.

Behavioral psychology shows that rewards delivered unpredictably are particularly effective in reinforcing behavior (Ferster & Skinner, 1957). Slot machines operate on this principle: most interactions produce nothing of value, but occasional rewards are enough to sustain continued play.

Social media feeds follow a comparable pattern. Not every piece of content is equally interesting, but intermittently something appears that is relevant, surprising, or emotionally engaging. Because these moments cannot be predicted, each new item carries potential value.

Internal discussions revealed in other ongoing lawsuits against social media companies2 describe this dynamic explicitly, referring to “intermittent rewards (think slot machines)” as especially effective in keeping users engaged . The comparison reflects a shared mechanism rather than a metaphor.

Therefore, in addition to interface design, the nature of the content itself plays a role. What sustains scrolling is not satisfaction, but anticipation.

Continuous Exposure and the Absence of Pause

Earlier forms of media consumption also involved rapid switching between content. Channel surfing on television is a familiar example. However, it remained a segmented activity. Programs ended, advertisements interrupted the flow, and switching channels required a deliberate action.

These interruptions created small pauses, even if they were not always welcome. They introduced moments in which continuing required a decision.

Scrolling removes those moments. Content is presented as a continuous stream, personalized and constantly updated. At the same time, it is accessed through a device that is almost always within reach. The phone is not just a medium, but an extension of everyday activity, making it easy not only to continue, but to return frequently throughout the day.

The effort required to continue is minimal, and there is no built-in interruption that prompts reflection. Over time, this changes how the interaction unfolds. It becomes easier to continue than to stop.

Responsibility and Its Limits

The recent verdict reinforces the idea that companies can be held accountable for how these systems are designed, particularly when younger users are involved. Children and adolescents are more vulnerable to these mechanisms, not only because self-regulation is still developing, but also because these platforms are embedded in everyday life in ways that are difficult to control externally.

For adults, the situation can be different. While they are also affected by these design mechanisms—intended to shape behavior and prolong use—they are generally less vulnerable. They are often better able to impose structural boundaries and prioritize offline responsibilities over immediate digital gratification. In this context, understanding how these mechanisms work becomes part of how adults can manage their effects.

Awareness as a Form of Control

Responses such as complete “digital detox” tend to frame the problem as one that can only be solved by total disengagement. If social media remains part of everyday use – for staying connected with distant friends, accessing information, or learning through short-form content – a more practical approach is to understand how these systems work while continuing to use them.

Recognizing the absence of stopping cues, noticing the role of anticipation, and identifying moments where scrolling continues without a clear intention can reintroduce a degree of control. These are small adjustments, but they operate on the same mechanisms that make the system effective.

Legal decisions may influence how platforms evolve, but the underlying principles—reward, anticipation, habit formation—are unlikely to change. Understanding them remains one of the most reliable ways to navigate their effects, especially in environments designed to make stopping less likely.
